There are many different ways to obtain assistance with breastfeeding in the beginning. I usually ensure that the baby has at least been latched on once before leaving the new mom and baby to their devices. This simple act ensures that the baby has a physiologic memory of how to nurse, despite its natural hunger to help establish breastfeeding. Breastfeeding in the immediate postpartum period can be as easy as 1,2, 3, suck. If that is your experience, all the better. If it is not, keep in mind that mastering breastfeeding is still a new task and can sometimes be aided by some info and demonstration. Remember that I will be calling sometime on day one and visiting one of the first three days after the birth to check on progress and assist if necessary. If it appears that more time and energy is needed to aid successful establishment of breastfeeding than I can give during our postpartum visits, then I may suggest contacting a La Leche league member or a Lactation Consultant. The website www.medela.com has useful information as well. You don’t have to hire one ahead of time. See how it goes first and if something comes up don't hesitate to utilize support people and other resources.
